Sri Lanka takes on Namibia in match 1 of the ICC T20 World Cup qualifier on Sunday, October 16, in Geelong. The qualifiers will be played from October 16-21. Australia play New Zealand to kick off the Super 12 campaign on October 22.
A total of 8 teams will be participating in the qualifiers. Sri Lanka, Namibia, UAE, the Netherlands, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Scotland, and Ireland are the 8 teams. During the qualifier round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, a total of 12 matches will take place. Group A teams will play one match with the other teams in the group. Similarly, Group B teams will play one each against the other teams of the group.
Since there are 4 teams in each group, each team will play 3 matches during the qualifier round. After the end of the qualifier round, the top two teams in Group A and Group B points table will qualify for the super 12 round. Two teams will join Group 1 of the super 12 round while the 2 other teams will join Group 2.
Sri Lanka head into the qualifiers after winning the Asia Cup title recently. They defeated Pakistan in the final. They also defeated India who was seen as the favourites to win the title this time. Dasun Shanaka is eyeing T20 glory after being crowned the Asia Cup champions.
Namibia played the T20 World Cup last year and will be playing the qualifiers this year. They will be led by Gerhard Erasmus who led them in the last T20 World Cup as well. Jan Frylinck, David Wiese, Ruben Trumpelmann, Zane Green and Bernard Scholtz all played in the last T20 World Cup as well.
