Nick Kyrgios has admitted that he didn’t take tennis “seriously enough” as he criticised his old mentality towards the sport while discussing his chances of winning a Grand Slam title. The world No 20 is playing his first tournament since the US Open in Tokyo this week and is already setting his sights on winning January’s Australian Open.
Kyrgios is playing his first tournament in a month at this week’s Japan Open. He will open his campaign against Tseng Chun-hsin on Tuesday - his first match since losing to Karen Khachanov in the US Open quarter-final - and the Aussie has now shared his thoughts on that defeat for the first time as he discussed his chances of winning a Major.
The 27-year-old enjoyed the best summer of his career, reaching his maiden Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon before winning his seventh title in Washington, and went into the US Open as one of the favourites as a result. But he lost in a five-set thriller at the quarter-final stage and has now described the defeat as “heartbreaking”.
“I thought the US Open was a great chance,” he said when discussing his hopes of winning a Major. “Obviously that one really, really hurt because I definitely thought that I was the favourite after I beat Medvedev.”
