Li Tu has penned a heartbreaking message to his late mother after he won his first Challenger title shortly after she passed away. The 26-year-old arrived in Korea just a day after her funeral and came through qualifying to lift the biggest title of his career after taking a six-year hiatus from tennis.
Tu enjoyed the best week of his career at the Seoul Challenger, arriving just one day after his late mother’s funeral to compete in the qualifying. The Australian’s mum lost her battle with cancer last month, and he lifted the title in Korea the day before her birthday.
The new world No 190 penned an emotional tribute to his mum on Instagram after he came through the qualifying to reach the main draw in Seoul, where he dropped just one set en route to the title and defeated the fifth and sixth seeds, his countrymen Christopher O’Connell and James Duckworth. “Today is your birthday Mum,” Tu wrote underneath a series of photos showing his title win and himself with his late mother.
“It has been the toughest 2 months of my life. Watching you battle cancer, struggle and fight every day as you slowly lost your senses. Continuing tennis training because you were relentless that I must keep going and you are “getting better”. Being by your side as you took your last breath on 24/09/22 surrounded by our family who love you so much.”
